I have also fallen in love with PHP4, and although I completely prefer to use a Linux/Unix/Solaris environment whenever possible there are times where it is not possible, let me take you through one of my recent experiences. Customer: Bank One (Yes, Bank One Now uses PHP) Program: Online Leasing Application for Bankers: Completely Automate the Lease Process. The program was fine, PHP was acceptable, but the problem was the usable environments. They are almost completely a NT house, and it had to be integrated into many already existing pieces of software. So using PHP on NT was the only option (for now at least), and I am very proud to say the current testing is going well. So I really think that although it should not be the main focus of PHP, NT is defiantly a viable platform that PHP should be available for. There is a lot of hate for PHP from Java and ASP people, I had a client tell me they heard PHP was horrible from a 'consultant' and that ASP was the only viable choice, yuck! Take a look at http://www.phpsucks.com and see where it goes, http://java.sun.com (sun does not own that domain). Need I say more? Although personally I can't even use it for my spare-time project either =) How many others of you feel like there should be more time put into the windows part of PHP? I know that this, for some, is like trying to beat yourself to death with a spounge, but in reality there should be many of us that don't have the resources to swith from win to linux without serious implication on the internal workings of the company (and it's clients). I personally have come to fall in love with PHP4, it suits every one of my needs. It's easy to learn (if you're already familiar with C syntax), it's easy to structure (and I put much effort into structuring my code for maintainability issues), it's open source (now who could argue with that?) and much more. I think most of us, when aiming at a large scale enviroments, wants to have an ASP replacement. The PHP code and syntax, the ability to use the same COM components (which we as a company already have access to through contact, and that aren't available in the linux enviroment), and the resouces, combined with high performance.. Now that would be neat, but it isn't possible without a stable ISAPI module (most of us lost people use IIS you know).. since ASP is as crippled as it gets. =) -- PHP Windows Mailing List (http://www.php.net/) To unsubscribe, e-mail: php-windows-unsubscribe@lists.php.net For additional commands, e-mail: php-windows-help@lists.php.net To contact the list administrators, e-mail: php-list-admin@lists.php.net
