Lee,
PHP is server side it cant do anything on your local PC.
You need a client side langaueg like:
Java Applets: These are "sandbox'd" however so you can do little on the
local PC without a bit of work.
Javascript: Again client side but i doubt if it allows you to do fire up
applications.
ActiveX: Froom my limited knowledge you could do practically anything like
delete the users harddrive or whatever... very low security
Flash: Nifty for animated and simple apps that are also "Sandbox'd"
Depending on what you want to do there may be another way around it... say
for example you want the user to open a particualr Word doc simply link to
the http://myserver.com/myword.doc or even if you where
100% sure of where
it was file://c:/my documents/myword.doc (not sure about the exact syntax
here but have a play)
But if you want to take over there PC and do whatever you want with it then
ActiveX is probably for you. (But people may not run your ActiveX control
due to these risks)

Subject: Launching local apps from PHP
Apologies if this is a FAQ. I have been reading some of the COM discussions
with interest.
What I really want is to be able to run a PHP script that is sitting on a
remote
server and be able to have applications opened on my PC, not on the server.
Suspect I am missing something obvious but is this possible?
Thanks.
Lee
