Creating a sql statement to search.

php4, apache and mysql. What is the easiest way to create a SELECT
statement from a form to do a search where there can possibly be one or
many input fields from the search form. Would using 'if isset' combined
with '.=' to add on to the string be the best method or is there an easier
approach?
