How can I use Sessions without writing files?

I've read somethings that make me think I can store session variables in memory
instead of a local filesystem.
Is this true and ifso how do I do it?
If I *have* to store session information on a filesystem can anyone recommend a
good method for
automatically deleting the session files when they expire?
