printer functions

I'm trying to do a printer_open but I keep on getting a warning that it can't connect to the printer. The printer isn't local to the web server. It exists as a network printer (shared by another system). I'm using a fully Windows environment (I know...I know). I've tried specifying the printer name as the share name, system name, and IP address. None of which work. Is there a trick to making a connection? I hope that you don't need to have only a local printer.
