Hi
i'd like to discuss the future directory structure and extension naming
scheme in PHP5.
As some people are currently rewriting domxml and expat, I think, it's
about time to come up with some decent scheme. As a lot of the XML
Support in PHP5 will be based on libxml2, it would make sense to base
those extensions on some common stuff.
My proposal is (and I didn't really think it through, maybe there are
some holes in it)
We put all libxml2 based extension in subdirectories of ext/xml ->
ext/xml/dom
ext/xml/sax
ext/xml/xslt
ext/xml/schema
ext/xml/xpath
etc...
in ext/xml there are some common used functions (a lot of those
extensions need access to DomDocument and associated classes and the
whole memory management).
configure would then take the options:
--enable-xml-dom
--enable-xml-sax
or even
--enable-xml-all
The naming scheme could then be:
xml_dom_foobar
xml_xpath_foobar
as most presumably all xml extensions will have a OO-Interface, it
doesn't really matter, if the names get a little bit long this way.
The current ext/xml function (xml_parser, xml_set_...handler, etc) could
be kept for BC reasons (ext/xml is available for a too long time to just
get rid of those functions).
Opinions? other Suggestions?
