That is really weird, because mcrypt didn't change one single bit. Can
you send me your configure.log (or config.log) (privately please)?

configure in php 4.1.2 will recognize libmcrypt 2.4.x (tested with
libmcrypt 2.4.15/16 and 22) as libmcrypt 2.2.x.
This will cause compile to fail due to some missing #define
php 4.1.1 perfectly works instead (tested with the same libmcrypt
versions).
