If it's missing it shouldn't. If you're not seeing an error, you should modify your
server setup to log errors rather than 'silently fail'

I get PHP from the opensuse devel:languages:php repository.

function_exists will return false.

This behaviour started with a recent update. 

phpinfo() shows GD and freetype support installed.

The function imagettfbbox does exist, but the function imagettftext seems to silently fail. My guess
is that it uses imageftbbox.
