It works even tough not necessarily directly. It is possible to take inspiration from homebrew for
example https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-core/blob/master/Formula/php.rb
; I personally use a script to set all environment variables before build.

Is it missing code updates in extensions, i don't think so.
