Replacing the provided php4apache.dll with the same one from the v4.1.1
installation, it works perfectly, apart from the fact that it's running
the wrong version!

device attached to the system is not functioning:
I've seen this bug with a previous version, not with this version
however.
Freshly downloaded 4.3.1 zip version from php.net
Previously had v 4.1.1 running with apache 1.3.27 which ran fine.
However I removed v4.1.1 and installed v4.3.1 and I am now getting this
error.
php.ini is I believe setup correctly.
