Hi, I mean you would use the RewriteRule to change something like "http://www.magazine.com/articles/billgatesbites" to "http://www.magazine.com/show.php?art=billgatesbites". That way when you add articles to the database you can reference them (externally) as a regular URL, but you only need one script to display them (the show.php script would get the value of 'art' and look up the article in the database and display it; the user need never know about the show.php script).
