Hi Eric,
you wrote: what's really open for discussion I guess is the process in how
webservers/database servers are organized - and to what would it take to
do a query across all those databases
in response: you could use something like Virtuoso
(http://www.openlinksw.com/virtuoso) which will allow you to link in
multiple back end databases, and appear as one schema to your application.
Then you can hit Virtuoso either via ODBC or JDBC and query all the back end
db's as if they are local. You can also use Virtuoso to do transactional or
snapshot replication, and gain some ability to manage your data that way.
I've used it a bit with PHP, works fine, is much cheaper than Oracle, and
outperforms all the rest by a nice margin.
As far as scalability goes, one customer is using 3 Virtuoso db's of between
24 and 28 gigs each, supporting 8000 concurrent hits, so that shouldn't be a
problem.
In addition, Virtuoso is a SOAP server, if you wanted to do some stuff with
XMLRPC, and can transform SQL to XML on the fly, and has an in-build XSLT
engine.
Hope this helps!
Best regards,
Andrew
