mysql_connect returning error message

Hello,
For some strange reason, when I try to do:
$dblink = mysql_connect("<hostname>", "<user>",
"<password>");
if I echo $dblink it returns the message "Resource id #1"
because of this, when I do:
mysql_select_db("<databasename>", $dblink);
and create the query and return the result, etc. I get the following message:
Warning: Supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in
(Then/it/lists/the/filename and line #)
Presently, I'm using:
Web Server = PWS/Win98
PHP4
MYSQL 3.22
Does anyone know why mysql_connect() is returning a message instead of
a value and how to fix it?
