I use them both (and Oracle too). My personal favorite is Interbase.
Great features, light on resources, very fast and runs on varaiety
of platforms.
It has great support for SQL standarts and easy to administer, and you
can extend it easily with UDFs (user defined functions)
Interbase lacks the level of access restrictions provided by mysql. The
access is by user name and password. You can't limit it based on IP address
or the host name like in mysql.
There are some features in MySQL that are not supported by interbase
e.g. the LIMIT clause and the number of affected rows by a query.
Finally I can suggest you to check out Manuel Lemos's Metabase. It's a
database abstraction package that you can use to hide the differences
of databases. Currently Interbase is not supported, but that support is up
to me, and I hope to finish it soon.
You can find Metabase at
