BArry, For someone just starting you were asking relatively sophisticated questions. I don't know about books, but there are a lot of good tutorials. Julie Meloni has useful ones at thickbook, http://www.thickbook.com and there are others at WebMonkey, DevShed, PHP Builder, and Zend. Check the tiny little "links" button on the top right of the php.net main page. Waaay back a company called Fox & Geller offered a code generating system for dBaseII -- it turned out crappy and incorrect code.
