Barry, You can't buy a decent computer book for less than NZD100! That's a fair price against what I paid. The USD price looks even worse. Tried Amazon etc? =dn ----- Original Message ----- From: Barry Rumsey To: PHPml@DandE.HomeChoice.co.uk Cc: php-db@lists.php.net Sent: 23 January 2002 18:09 Subject: Re: [PHP-DB] Books and what nots Thanks guys. The only thing I don't like about the book is the price ( $129.95 NZ dollars ),but never mind i need it. Since about late Nov I started to use php and have only learned the easy bits, like how to connect, count ,like, where and a little about join, it's when i get to the ,else,if,etc... that I don't know. Using mysql-front has also helped as you can see the code it's using to access and change the database. Once again Thanks. -------Original Message------- From: DL Neil Date: Thursday, 24 January 2002 3:23:55 a. To: Barry Rumsey; php-db@lists.php.net Subject: Re: [PHP-DB] Books and what nots Barry, Ok I started a artist(music) site and was using xoops as a base. I started altering some of the code( well the bits that were easy) to suit what I thought I'd need.Well since doing this , I have found this to be no where near what I had hoped to achieve. So I've decided to bite the bullet and start from from the beginning. I'm a complete beginner to php and mysql. I brought a book called ' mysql/php database applications' but most of this just flys over my head. Anyway getting to the point, what is a good book or web site for a complete newbie. all my questions i have been asking have been so that i could alter xoops and you guys have been great, but the time has come for me to get serious and start learning php. I'm not getting any younger and time is starting to fly. =Pleased to see your decision. I have been tempted to risk being branded as anti-newbie and comment in blunt, Kiwi style, that you have asked some intricate questions but from an apparently low level of knowledge... =I think Welling and Thomson "PHP and MySQL Web Development", SAMS, will appeal to you (too), because it covers the basics and then moves into examples which you will be able to readily apply to your own interests. It has a good practical coverage and is written in an airy style - use the manuals for reference purposes/fine details. Drawbacks are that SHE insists on making a gender point which detracts from the reader's flow (IMHO) and it is not designed for someone who has not done any programming/scripting/macro-ing before. =Regards, =dn . ____________________________________________________ IncrediMail - Email has finally evolved - Click Here
