Hi Michael,
For our development servers we run Oracle 8.1.5 on RedHat Linux 6.1 with Apache 1.3.9/PHP-4.0.1p12 and Allaire Coldfusion 4.5.1. We also run some MySQL databases. However, we're moving to S.u.S.E Linux 7.0 and Oracle 8.1.6 for the production machines (2 Dell rack servers for Oracle and the same for Apache/Coldfusion (we don't need PHP on the production site)).
Linux was chosen a) because it's free b) I know it a lot better than NT and c) so that we might scale to Solaris in the future, (although, I doubt we will ever need to do this).
With regards to Oracle pricing, we have been quoted 2,500 GBP, (~3,700 USD) per 600 Mhz Intel Pentium III, per annum for the Standard Edition of 8i. Ironically, I think Oracle now works out cheaper on SPARC hardware compared with Intel. I was quoted this price plan about 3 months ago. Now, it is nearly impossible to buy a new server that has less than a 900Mhz Pentium III CPU. Finally, since our Oracle supplier rarely returns our calls, we will probably forget to tell them our actual CPU speed and numbers. I feel they are not really interested in revenues from small installations or internet start-ups like ours.
BTW, all of the above is my personal opinion and does not represent Trade Basics Ltd.
Hope some of this is relevent.

Hi, I was wondering if anybody built and host a oracle/php/linux web site out there. I was surprised to learn that to move my web site to production i'd have to pay $110000 for a Oracle 8i EE license. I am using only one user account in oracle on one single server! If anyone has a similar experience please let me know! I though the named user single license perpetual would be good enought for my needs. Gee im thinking of moving to tab delimited format ;) Thanks for any help!
