Have you tried "set nocount on" in your stored procs? I use stored
procs with freetds_jdbc against MSSQL 6.5 and have no trouble except
with stored procs that send mail.

If things continue not to work, you could try the freetds_jdbc driver,
but I think that would mean using BRL or JSP instead of PHP for those
pages that need it.
