$HTTP_POST_VARS question

to those smarter than I ....
I am trying to upload a client side image to my server directory. This is done through the use of a form with the type as 'file'.
For some reason I am not getting a value for my image through $HTTP_POST_VARS. All other data is being passed except the file data.
Is there a limitation on whether or not 'file' type data can be passed using the $HTTP_POST_VARS ?
