A socket is a networking term used to describe a connection. There are network
sockets, which are defined by IP and PORT number, and then there are Unix
sockets which are actually "file" that are created in the /tmp directory
temporarily. It provides a simulated network connection through a file instead
of a buffer in the network card or ram. Socket programming is great fun, some
additional infor here: http://www.linuxsocket.org/books/Sockets/programs/
For ythe scope of your question though, it says, connect through the TCP/IP
method, or use a temporary file on the local host to connect.
