PHP/MySQL + 'special' characters

I have an admin page that inserts form data into a MySQL db. the only
problem is that if someone puts something in that has an accent in it
(chàteaux, for example), the db barfs...I can't find anything in the
MySQL documentation about special characters. maybe i'm not looking in
the right place. Any help would be appreciated. I'm assuming this is
MySQL, not PHP, correct? Thanks,
