php & SSI

php and SSI do not seem to be able to co-exist on the same page. As soon
as the php3 tag is appended to a document name SSI calls seem to be
abandoned. Though it seems to be true that you must have the .php tag to
run php.
I'm fairly new to this and am wondering if this observation is true as far
anyone knows.
