Update fields on same page

This is a newbie question so please bear with me.
What is the best way to update text fields that are on the same page as
a drop-down list, when a user selects data from a drop-down list? From
the input of the drop-down list I plan to query a table and populate the
text fields, but I want to do this without having to use a submit button
and going to a different page.
Help!
