How big will it get. Some people seem to think you need Oracle for
realy big sites. I suspect if you write it within MySQL limits you
should be fine till you need to have big iron servers, or big clusters
of servers to handle the load.

As far as adding SSL to your site it is changes to your web server, you
don't see any difference from the php programming point of view.
(Well, there are a few more environment variables, but you can ignore
them.)
Credit card processing is pretty much driven by who you work with to
provide verification. You need to decide that before you will know
what it will take for programming. You might want to ask you
verification canidates about thier php support.
