Mark, ODBC, properly written, will bypass SQLNet and allow your client app (PHP) to deal directly with the CLI of the database. In addition, ODBC can enforce additional functionality onto back end databases, and one of the results of this can be speed. E.g. the driver will have a better fetch-buffer-size (fewer hops) and robust cursor support (more efficient handling of result-sets). You will also find some huge differences in ODBC drivers as well. Hope this helps.
