how to get blobs from SELECT in interbase with php?

I am wondering how could i get blob value from interbase with php,
e.g. :
$query = "select blob_field from sometable";
$sth = ibase_query($dbh, $query);
$res = ibase_fetch_object($sth);
print $res->BLOB_FIELD;
now, when i do so, I get several bytes (i guess it's a beginning of the
blob).
I assume there are right ways to get blobs from the db, could someone
tell me how to achieve this? Maybe something is broken in my
installation? I tried it on Debian 2.2, php4.0.2
