chirp (company i work for) has used both over the years. we use only
postgresql now, simply for its reliability, ease of administration, and
friendly developers. we've never found performance to be a problem,
which is probably the first thing you'll hear if you mention it to a
mysql zealot.
we've used it on linux (mostly) and occasionally solaris.
i certainly don't know anyone who prefers mysql over postgresql. i'm
sure there are such people though. i've certainly noticed that this
list is dominated by mysql and oracle questions, which leads me to
believe that one or more of the following are true: (in relation to php,
anyway)
(a) mysql and oracle are harder to use for more people
(b) far less people use postgresql than mysql or oracle
(c) the postgresql users need less help than mysql or oracle users
thats my opinion. (you *DID* ask for opinions, so that's what you're
getting, no flames please) :-)
