The problem with Java applets (esp if you are linking to a db) is that
they *dont* give real time interactivity - but because the look like an
app people expect that as soon as they press a button something should
happen. With a PHP (or JSPs, or any SSI) page view based application
people expect a web page to take time to download and clicking a link
usually gives them expected outcome.
In my experience users will think that a Java applet that takes 8 seconds
to display a table from a db is slow and unresponsive yet a page based
app which takes 8-10 seconds to render a page with the same info is
'lightening fast'.
