I believe you mention Interbase.
I'm working with this database for a long time (since 4.2 in 1997) and it's
my favourite. First of all, now it's free (under somewhat modified MPL).
It's available on many platforms (Win32, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX) without
significant differencies (only on Win32 Services API is available however).
On unix-like platforms you can choose between Classic and SuperServer
architecture. Installation and maitenance is easy, you even do not need
special admin person. Compared to M$ SQL is fast and robust. While it's not
fully compliant with SQL-92 (lack of CASE reserved word), it has very
powerful trigger engine. There's also one thing, that not too many DBMS
have - UDF support. Almost any dynamic linking library can be used to
enchance server capabilities. While Interbase/Inprise/Borland does not have
special support for users, there are few sites, where you can obtain help
24/7 for free (newsgroups, mailing lists, www sites).
Unfortunately, there are some bugs in php_interbase library now, but i
believe they will be corrected in next releases.
Cheers
