When version 7.1 comes out, it won't be (it's not very far away). I'm not sure if it's in the latest release right now (7.0.3 I think). You can re-compile with bigger row sizes (up to 32k I think), it'd be worth the effort as far as I'm concerned :)
http://www.phpbuilder.com/columns/tim20001112.php3 This article was a nice reading on PostGreSQL. Another article was written in July which also seem to favor PostGreSQL as he imported geocrawlers.com's 10gig database. His conclusion came to that PostGreSQL will not quit as with MySQL, but just becomes slower. That I can live with if adding additional hardware can bring it back up to top notch. Although I have one concern that you might could address with PostGreSQL. According to the article, there is 8k row size limit. Is this still true with the latest release of PostGreSQL?
