I went throught this same agony not too long ago myself. The client
libraries are basically just header files that you need from an Oracle 8i
server install. After installing the Oracle8i Client on my Apache box, it
didn't install the header files I needed. I compiled
using --with-oci=/usr/local/oracle/8i/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5. It
looks for these header files in the $ORACLE_HOME/network/public directory.
Just to be safe (I didn't want to take the time to find out EXACTLY which
header/source files I needed), I copied ALL of the header/source files in
the $ORACLE_HOME/network/public folder from the server install to the client
install. This worked for me. Hope this helps...
