The wording of that Apache message is completely bogus.
It simply means "something is broken," where something can be
the compiler, the linker, or flags thereof. It could also be
that you exceed your quotas, permission problems, or that
your hardware is broken and thus some tool failed.
I didn't get any replies to my question how one can find out
what has gone wrong (i.e. error messages). Apache's configure
script does not seem to log what it does. I hope this will be
improved in future releases, since the system is completely
useless in its current incarnation.
I'm not sure whether we should close these reports immediately
since they don't contain more information than "it does not
work" or to ask people to provide more information.
