Please try the latest PHP 4 CVS. There have been numerous
fixes since Beta 2, which might also cure your problems.

--with-apache builds a static Apache module. The only way to
build a shared PHP module is to use APXS.

You do not need to put all library paths into
/etc/ld.so.conf.

I plan on adding a --disable-rpath option to turn it off
optionally. Since most library paths go through
AC_ADD_LIBPATH, establishing this requires only a few
changes.

gcc doesn't support it, ld does. gcc supports -Wl.
