That is not true. DBI is only portable, if the underlying
databases have the same feature-set WRT the features you use.
For example, DBI provides transactions, albeit not all
databases implement them. Thus, to get portable transactions,
all used databases have to support them.
Another example of database abstraction is implemented in
AOLserver. It is a minimalistic approach; it does not contain
any of the advanced features found in DBI (i.e. BLOBs,
transactions). I do like AOLserver's pools of database
connections; they are comparable to PHP's persistent
connections, but AOLserver implements them in a more general
way.
A useful PHP extension would have the following properties:
- DBI's feature-set
- AOLserver's pools
