I was discouraged to implement it for PHP4 as I was told it shouldn't be done
inside PHP but should be an output filter of Apache 2. Since Apache 2 is nowhere
near ready for prime time AFAIK I might be tempted to provide an inofficial
patch/module for PHP4 sometimes in the first quarter of the next millenium ;-)
Right now I'm too busy to do it :-(
[ BTW: If anyone knows any deails about the rumour that some IE versions send
Accept-Encoding: gzip headers but don't really support it I'd be glad to hear
it. We're running a site ( http://search.ch/ ) doing
compression (only on the
result pages) and didn't get any complaints yet. So I guess if it IS more than a
rumour it has to be a very unpopular version of IE. ]
Cheers,
- Chris
