as this doen't happen with oracle 8.0.5 on linux it is very likly to be a "bug" in the oracle-libs. (at least i haven't seen it on 8.0.5 - and i use that all day long). the problem seems to be that the parent process (apache+mod_php) doesn't react "right" when the oracle-shadow process dies. a workaround would be if you would *NOT* use the BEQ interface to oracle, but instead went thru the oracle-listener. that way the oracle-listener would be the parent of the oracle-shadows and i'm "more-or-less" confident, that the listener will work "nice" with the shadows. please try to setup an "ipc" listener.ora/tnsnames.ora and connect to your oracle thru that - that should solve your trouble. i'll try to install 8i somewhen in the near future and i might be able to find a "real" fix (i'd call it a workaround) for this.
