I wrote the Java extension. The best advice I can give you is start from a
working base (either of the Java or COM ones would do). If anybody looking
into this has any questions, I'd be glad to consult, test, and perhaps even
contribute.
If you start with ext/java/java.c, remove any functions with "jvm" or
"Java_net" in their name, as well as "_java_makeArray". With what remains,
the most important functions to focus on are at the
java_call_function_handler (this creates new instances as well as calling a
method), _java_getset_property (does both gets and sets), and
_php_java_destructor (does what you'd would expect).
Add in the CORBA magic, and do a global change of java to CORBA and you
should be up and running!

P.S. If you can figure out where any of this goes in the documentation, I
would appreciate it. I've been trying to figure out how to integrate the
Java stuff in for quite some time now.
