I apologize for this bug report. I hadn't read the FAQ in some time and I didn't realize that this was the intended operation. I can understand your frustration and as a result your sarcasm, but if you would only make a documentation change to the mysql_pconnect() page that mentions that the user should *specifically* read the section of the FAQ about persistent connections, I bet that you would get a hell of a lot fewer of stupid bug reports like the one I just gave. Heck, you could even copy that new paragraph out of the FAQ and just stick it in the mysql_pconnect() page just to make it a no-brainer.
Again, I've read the FAQ quite a few times when php 3.0 was first available, but I consider myself an accomplished php programmer and there isn't much in the FAQ that I need to read. Obviously, I would have benefited from the additions about the number of persistent connections that PHP will open to a MySQL database before I submitted the bug report, but I've read that section 1000 times. Persistant connections with PHP have been working like they do since that function was introduced, but you only recently added that crucial bit of information that explains the behavior.
Thanks for looking into this and thank you for PHP. Again, I apologize for wasting your time.

Daniel Beckham
