We have tried to use the cygwin stuff in the past. I used it for the
Windows version of PHP 2 and it really was not very good. Shane
spearheaded the port to use the native MSVC compiler which is by far the
most popular compiler for Windows and the result was infinitely better
than what I was able to do with the cygwin compiler. I don't know why you
would expect us to lean towards free tools. We lean towards the best
tools for the most part. That is also why we tend to lean towards UNIX
and why that gets a bit more attention. It's just a fact of life. We
can't please everybody and have to make some choices.
