The difference between convert_to_xxx_ex and convert_to_writeable_xxx_ex

As the subject says, i need to know the difference between
convert_to_xxx_ex and convert_to_writeable_xxx_ex. i'm writing a function
which modifies arguments passed by reference and i want to ensure correct
behaviour.
