Weirdness in var_dump() code

Can someone explain the logic behind:
i = sprintf(buf, "%*c%sbool(%s)\n", COMMON,
((*struc)->value.lval?"true":"false"));
PHPWRITE(&buf[1], i - 1);
Why do we need to start printing at buf+1? Why not just print out level-1
spaces, with ensuring it doesn't go under zero?
