adding libraries to php4?

I've got a library or two that I'd like to link with php4 for one of
my machines. It's a Sparc Ultra 2 that runs Solaris 7 and apache
v1.3.3.
Since this is Solaris I need to add -l, -L, and -R switches for ld.
When I built php v3.0.14, I was able to do this by directly hacking
the Makefile. Now that I'm trying to build php4 I'm not sure where
(or how) to make these kinds of changes.
My question is: Which file(s) I should edit to change the
APXS_LDFLAGS? If there is some other (better) way to add libraries
and related ld switches, I'd like to know.
