I wrote an autoconfig test example checking for link options <none>,
-R{somepath} and -rpath {somepath}, checked for producing a working
executable in that order.
As I'm not too experienced with autoconf perhaps you could double check
that I got it right. (I wrote the test for libz.so as it's one of the
shared libraries I had available. Cross compilation part of AC_TRY_RUN
macros isn't very clever but what the heck... :-))
