As I said already, your old DOS books will tell you that
there is an area of 10 bytes per directory entry which is
marked as reserved. OS which employ VFAT (Win95 and later)
use this reserved area to store additional data.
The additional fields in the Linux structure have nothing to
do with VFS compliance (that would be handled at another
layer).
