Probably unrelated, but you could save yourself some trouble
by recompiling php4 and specify the path to mysql.
What you have happening is, php3 (which I assume you are using
concurrently because of the '--enable-versioning' flag) is using
mysql's client, and php4 is using its own built-in client.
This is known to cause problems.
