I see the same behavior... but it is not related to 4.0.2RC2... the same was true for all php4 versions I have tried... The workaround that works for me is to move AddModule mod_php4.c somewhat higher in httpd.conf (before mod_ssl)... That bug is believed to be in glibc2.1.3 not in php4... mysql client libs from official MySql rpm were compiled with threads support and the bug is probably related to libpthread as I see exactly the same core dump traces with Oracle libs that were linked with libpthreads too. I am going to try it with glibc2.1.92.
