Can you do a var_dump() of the variable you are using in that line before the line? I assume your line looks something like: $var[] = "foo";
*sigh* It is *not* a string originally, it´s never been used, uninitialized the problem is that some variables are changed! this explains, that $somevar[]='sdf' generates this error, because some string is now the zval of it, although it *should* be unintialized debug and release versions throw error messages at points where the other build did not threw any error message here andi, trust me.. code snipplet: 171 var_dump($primaries[$i]); 172 echo __LINE__; 173 $primaries[$i][]=array($tmp,$value); output: NULL 172 Fatal error: [] operator not supported for strings in class.dataobjects.interface.php on line 173 do you understand what I mean with weird? and at another place it show up with a normal array like $foo[]='s', it isn´t related being $primaries a multi-dim array
