Hrm.. Ok, after looking more closely at the code I did realize I need an
associative array. However, a set of wrong arguments to the function
should not cause a core dump. If this thing is going to require an
associative array there should be a check to make sure the argument is
actually an associative array.

The issue to resolve would be figuring out the actual variable names, I
gather. And that isn't inherently obvious how we would do that right now
without some low-level changes to actually include the variable name in
the pval struct.
