BCMath -> gmp?

The licence situation with the BCMath extension is quite annoying. To
me, it seems that binary distributions of PHP including BCMath is not
allowed.
I wonder if the same functionality could be achieved with the gmp (GNU
multiple precision arithmetic library)? According to gmp's documentation
(info gmp), gmp has the LGPL licence which would enable linking to it
from PHP.
Although I'm not a good C-programmer, I consider taking a shot at
creating PHP gmp extension. However, before I start, I'd like to hear if
1) someone is already working on it
2) someone has comments on the idea
