I had an interesting conversation with Marko Karppinen (markonen) about this issue on #php (at EFNET). Although I had terrible headache I can recall him saying something like ditching the GD altogether and making some 'PhotoShop'-like graphics extension of our own which doesn't rely on any external libs but libpng, libjpeg, etc. I might have misunderstood what he actually meant but he'll propably tell more about he's plans himself..I hope. =) --Jani
